Lord of Light, to me, isn't in the same league. I recently acquired a copy of the English translation (Arthur Waley, 1942) of the classic Chinese book "Monkey" by Wu Ch'Eng-En written in the 16th century. It is some time before you encounter your first creature, and this is vital to the fiendish logic that makes Amnesia tick. And to each generation was born a creature of Light and a creature of Darkness. Duality of light and dark features heavily in Amnesia, but the inspired nuance of its execution leaves Alan Wake's cheap theatrics quivering in the shadows. I read it's similar to “Lord of Light” by the same author but I never had any occasion to come across it. And great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between Good and Evil. It's one of my favorite books ever. Overall, Roger Zelazny is my favorite SF author, on the strength of his short stories, Isle of the Dead, Call Me Conrad, and Creatures of Light and Darkness. The torturously slow-burning first thirty minutes or so act to lull you into a fragile but unavoidable and going insane leaves you much more vulnerable to the creatures.
